Biography

I am a Lecturer in Classics at the University of Glasgow. I have published extensively on ethics and education in the ancient biographer Plutarch, and worked on his revival in late Byzantium and the period of the Enlightenment.

Research and Teaching Interests

In my new book project, I examine the psychological writings of the Greek physician Galen with a view to casting light on notions of ancient psychotherapy and moralising rhetoric. I am also interested in the interplay between Greek medical texts and their audience, and I am co-editing a volume entitled ‘Greek Medical Texts and the Readers: From Hippocrates to Islam and Byzantium’. I will be offering an honours course entitled ‘Ancient Medicine’ which will be open to Classics students, History students, and intercalating Medical students.
