Biography

I am an experienced researcher, interpreting practitioner and activist and have spent most of my professional and academic career working and researching mainly with asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in Scotland.

I worked for ten years as a community interpreters, largely in the area of healthcare interpreting covering a broad range of primary care health provision

My research interests lie in the broad field of migration studies, covering the various aspects of social, cultural and political life affecting migrants' experiences of ‘settlement’, integration and belonging.

Research and Teaching Interests

My research is broadly focused on migration, with a developing focus of my work is a concern with researching super-diversity and how this relates to important issues around cohesion and integration, identity and belonging, local and transnational networks, rights and citizenship, access to public services and service delivery, community development, health and well-being and social exclusion. These issues relate directly to current debates within the social sciences around inequality, inclusion, identities, engagement and social change, and how these are shaping public and policy understandings of society.
