In this project Anna McFarlane will explore the ways in which the experiences of the Scottish writer Naomi Mitchison (1897-1999) as both a geneticist and a nurse shaped her science fiction, her political writing, and her activism in favour of women’s reproductive rights. Through archival research and literary analysis, informed by science fiction studies, this project will explore Mitchison’s importance to twentieth-century medical humanities. The outcomes of the project will be a conference presentation and a peer-reviewed journal article, with potential for future projects.
